00 00 00 Great Tips from This Issue 5 TRICKS OF THE TRADE CONTENTS October 2017 Volume 20 / Number 10 4 MoldMaking Technology —— OCTOBER 2017 Features 14 Design All Stressed Out Minimizing inherent molded-in stresses reduces plastic part failures. 20 Mold Repair Laser Focused Fiber laser technology is here, but is it the right solution for your operation? 24 Global Competition Mexico: Manufacturing Mecca to the South Get a mold-building perspective on this country's opportunities, trends and challenges. ON THE COVER Image courtesy of Fairway Injection Molds. This month's cover shows a 32-cavity mold for a pump sprayer top, which is currently being molded and assembled in Mexico. The mold features an eight-drop Ewikon HPS III-MH, 90-degree side hot- tip system for injecting the resin. This enables tight pitch and high-quality gates on the side of the parts with no cold runner waste. The mold also has slides and a spout pin that create the flow channel. The mold is ejected using ejector sleeves. See the related story on page 24. Images courtesy of (left to right) RJG, Fidia and MGS Mfg Group. 1. Pack It Up Do not ignore the possibility of overpacking, which typically occurs near the gate area in response to overcoming an enormous pressure gradient across the cavity. PG. 14. 2. Heat Relief Because diodes power FSS lasers in a specific wavelength that can be directly translated into laser light, they produce less extraneous heat. PG. 20. 3. Making It in Mexico The mold industry in Mexico is needed mainly for mold maintenance and repair, but big tool shops from the United States, Canada, Portugal and Spain have been interested in installing facilities in Mexico. PG. 24. 4. The Right Outfit A five-axis milling machine that is outfitted with a head measuring system can reduce the time it takes to verify the accuracy of heads and roto-tilting tables. PG. 34. 5. First and Foremost Automation begins with an understanding of whether the intended machining process is stable enough for the change.
