Products 56 MoldMaking Technology August 2015 Multitasking Turning Center Features Y Axis for Milling, Drilling Doosan's Lynx 220LSY high-speed multitasking turning centers feature a Y axis with milling and drilling capabilities, eliminating the need for secondary machining operations that might otherwise be performed on, say, a milling machine. The result is consistent part quality, predictable throughput and no operator intervention, the company says. The bed is a single-piece Meehanite casting with a heavy ribbing to prevent deformation and twisting. The guideways are on a 30-degree angle to maintain a minimal and constant distance from tooltip to guideway, thus ensuring maximum rigidity and virtually no deformation under heavy loads. The slant angle also provides good chip flow as chips and coolant slide downward into the chip pan. Roller-type linear motion guideways are used on all axes to allow high rapid traverse rates of 1,181 ipm on the X axis and 1,417 ipm on the Z axis, as well as 394 ipm on the Y axis. XYZ travel measures 8.07" x 4.13" (±2.065") x 22". The swing-over bed measures 23.6", the swing-over carriage 15.7", maximum turn- ing diameter 11.8" and maximum turning length 20". According to the company, the Y axis greatly increases the number of work- pieces that can be machined complete without using expensive custom rotary toolholders. It enables the milling cutter to machine above or below center- line. Possible operations include drilling and tapping of off-center crossholes, milling of flats, and roughing and finishing of keyways. Gas springs, which are cylinders filled with nitrogen, use the highly pressurized gas to provide required spring force. The product line consists of E 6350 Force, E 6360 Force Extreme and E 6320 Mini springs, and E 6310 and E 6315 spring plungers. According to the company, the gas springs comply with the Pressure Equipment Directive PED 97/23/EC, and are designed and manufactured with state-of-the-art CAD/CAM tools. They also are equipped with active safety systems that protect from overstroke, uncontrolled piston return and over- pressure, ensuring safe use on the machine and by the operator. Meusburger US Inc. The verification graphics screen has been redesigned so the user can custom- ize what information appears, whether full-screen verification graphics or digital readout (DRO) or both, to suit programming, machining or concurrent operations. The control also offers three remote jog options: standard, LCD and LCD wireless. The LCD units allow the machinist to set up tools and parts directly from the remote unit. All jog units feature a large 70-mm handwheel with finger-cup spinner, graspable over-molded body, integrated flashlight, mag- netic base and T-slot tongue. Also included are WinMax software features such as AdaptiPath, a con- versational pocketing function used in high-end CAD/CAM packages that is designed to increase metal removal rates, support rest machining, reduce cycle time and extend tool life due to controlled engagement cutting. A Job List feature lets users group files together and run them sequen- tially without operator intervention, promoting automation, lights-out machining, program stitching, file bundling and adaptive processes.
