Existing RS1 or RS2 systems can be upgraded with the RS3 upgrade package. In addition, enhanced versions of the portable measuring arm itself feature optimized ergonomics, a new wrist design and greater stability. The six-axis version introduces a new wrist designed around the complex contours of the human hand. The new wrist on the seven-axis arm is said to have a more natural feel with rotation centered around the system's probe. Both systems feature a lockable, zero-G counterbalance designed to improve arm movement, protect it from hard falls and enable single-handed operation. The measuring arm with integrated scanner com- bines non-contact scanning and tactile probing, making it suitable for point cloud inspection, product bench- marking, reverse engineer- ing, rapid prototyping, vir- tual assembly and CNC mill- ing applications. Scanner and probe measurements can be made seamlessly in one software session, the company says. All Romer measuring arms are available with PC-DMIS Touch Portable, a measurement software that utilizes high-resolution Multi-Touch display technol- ogy on a tablet PC. A wide field of view accommodates both large and tall mechanical parts, and CCD camera images and data processing enable the measurement of complex shapes. Both systems offer a large, 450 x 400 x 200-mm measurement stroke that supports high-speed measurement of large printed substrates and tall plastic injection-molded parts, as well as mass inspection of multiple parts simultaneously. While he VMA-4540V offers video measurement only, the VMA-4540 also provides optional touch-probe measurement and can accommodate Renishaw TP20 or TP200 probes. Touch probes enable measurement of 3D parts when video methods are unable to inspect lengths and angles in areas that not vis- ible from above. A single teaching file captures both video measurements and touch probe measurements in one. The machine's 3D Tool Analyzer software allows users to lay vertical, horizontal and freely selectable cutting planes at any position on the 3D model. From there, the software automatically analyzes the planes and provides exact measurements of the model's parameters, such as core diameter, rake angles and spiral pitch. Because the measurements are from the 3D model, users can work offline on a separate station. The machine also applies Walter's 3D Matcher software, which enables users to overlay two 3D models within a graphical user interface and perform a color-coded comparison. After the "match" of both models, the user receives an instant evaluation of the quality of the products and any deviations from the desired values.
