Global Competition 24 MoldMaking Technology —— OCTOBER 2017 By Cynthia Kustush Mexico: Manufacturing Mecca to the South Get a mold-building perspective on this country's opportunities, trends and challenges. M anufacturing in Mexico is growing, par- ticularly for automotive manufacturers, but also for aerospace, medical device and electronics original equipment manufactur- ers (OEMs) who are seeking near-shore access to supply-chain resources, lower production costs and favorable trade relations. We wanted to find out how some North American moldmakers are taking advantage of this growing opportunity. U.S. Moldmakers Supply Mainly Across Border While we at MoldMaking Technology acknowl- edge that we are not familiar with every U.S. mold shop, our concerted efforts to locate mold manufacturing companies that are based in the United States and that have additional mold- making operations in Mexico yielded none. Additional inquiries with shops building molds for customers in Mexico indicated that because of Mexico's direct proximity to the South, there does not seem to be a need among U.S. mold- makers to have mold manufacturing facilities in Mexico today. Fairway Injection Molds (Walnut, California) supplies molds to Mexico customers that pro- duce medical, cosmetics, caps and closures and personal care products. Fairway Injection Molds designed and built this 64-cavity mold for production in Mexico to produce a component that is part of a disposable consumer product. The mold is running Tritan resin through a 64-drop Husky UltraSync-E hot runner system to actuate the valve stems with perfect control. Fairway builds and services all of its molds destined for production in Mexico at its Walnut, California, plant. Image courtesy of Fairway Injection Molds.
