VoluMill machining strategies for toolpath calculation also have been integrated. These tool paths use smooth, flowing motion, eliminat- ing sharp directional changes and variances in tool load. According to Missler, using VoluMill in place of traditional roughing routines can reduce cycle times, extend cut- ting tool life and reduce stress on machine tools. TopSolid/Missler Software / 630-889-8055 / topsolid.com Improvements to CAM System Designed to Boost Cutting Time The 2015 version of Delcam's PowerMill CAM system includes improvements to the Vortex area-clearance strategy that are designed to produce higher feed and material-removal rates for reduced cutting time. The Vortex strategy uses a con- trolled engagement angle to main- tain optimum cutting conditions for the whole tool path and produce a deeper cut. In addition, cutting is under- taken at a more consistent volume-removal rate and at a near constant feed rate, extending tool life and protecting the machine, the company says. Enhancements to NX Realize Shape, a fully integrated subdivision modelling environment, give designers greater control over geom- etries and enable them to produce products with highly stylized shapes or complex surfaces. It speeds product development by eliminating the need to use separate tools for freeform design and engineering development. Although 3D modeling may be preferred for product design, a new 2D concept develop- ment tool enables initial layouts to be created in 2D more easily and quickly, the company says. Designs then can be migrated to 3D to complete the model. Additional enhancements to NX 10 include an optional touch-enabled interface that provides expanded access to the software's full design capa- bilities, and the company's Active Workspace environment, which provides tighter integration to product lifecycle management (PLM) software, reducing the time needed to find product information. NX 10 also offers a number of additional CAD/CAM/CAE enhancements, including new dynamically adjusted roughing strategies in NX CAM that automatically adapt to part geometry to enable better mold and die machining.
