116 MoldMaking Technology July 2015 Mold Maintenance, Repair & Surface Treatment Self-Adhesive Wrap Protects Molds from Corrosion Available from DMS, MetalRustGuard is a self-adhesive wrap that protects metal molds from rust and corrosion in virtually all climates, including high humidity and marine environments. The material is composed of a hydropho- bic polypropylene that prevents water vapor from being transmitted through it. Well-suited for packaging, storing and shipping mold components and tool- ing, it is impregnated with food-grade waxes and oils to prevent condensation from forming on the metal as temperatures change on the outside. When combined with an underlayer of high- phosphorus electroless nickel, the mold release is said to provide improved release, wear, lubricity and corrosion protection. Well-suited for plastic molding markets, the electroless nickel-based pro- cess provides precise coating uniformity over the entire mold surface, unlike processes such as chrome plating, the company says. Electroless nickel also is less expensive than chrome. Square One / 315-790-5921 / squareonecoatingsystems.com Cleaners Approved for Food-Related Applications Slide Products offers four mold cleaners that are newly registered NSF P1: IPA (isopropyl alcohol), Nexgen, On/Cycle and Mold Cleaner Plus Degreaser 4. NSF is a continuation of the USDA approval program for products used in plastics processing for food applications. The fast-evaporating IPA cleaner contains no chlorinated solvents and can remove silicones, grease, oil and wax buildup on metal surfaces. It leaves no residue, and thus does not require wiping. Nexgen also contains no chlo- rinated solvents, leaves no oily residue, and has a high solvency for resins, polymers and dies. On/Cycle, an at-the-press warm mold cleaner, works on molds as warm as 150°F and has no caustic or acidic compounds. Also with- out chlorinated solvents, Slide's most popular mold cleaner, Mold Cleaner Plus Degreaser 4, is formulated to evaporate fast and leave no residue. Slide Products Inc. / 847-541-7220 / slideproducts.com Oil Lubricant Complements Polishing Stones Boride Engineered Abrasives offers Premium Stoning Oil, a petroleum-based lubricant for use with mold and die polishing stones and abrasive papers. The nearly odorless formulation is less hazardous than other lubricants, is not harsh on hands, and does not promote oxidation on molds and dies, the com- pany says. It can be used on the workpiece or tool itself, or as a stone pre-soak. When used with polishing stones, the lubricant prevents mold polishing stone loading, and allows for more consistent and free cutting action. The compact systems can produce a non-contact, abrasion-resistant, per- manent mark, engraving or cut on virtually any type of material. Well- suited for engraving and modifying molds, they are said to be faster than comparable processes and can access difficult-to-reach areas.
