114 MoldMaking Technology July 2015 Mold Maintenance, Repair & Surface Treatment Micro Welder Repairs Molds of Various Materials The MoldMender micro welder from Rocklin Manufacturing is designed to repair plastic injection molds, rubber processing molds, and die cast- ing molds and dies made of steel. Typical applications are parting lines, corners/edges, pin holes/scratches, machining errors and more. The micro welder produces interlinking spot welds to bond metallic ribbon, wire, paste or powder to the desired area of the workpiece, using the same or similar materials as the workpiece. It uses virtually no heat, eliminating shrink lines and other cosmetic defects. Surface finishing by EDM, grinding, machining, plating or polishing can achieve desired sharp edges or other contours. Workspace dimensions measure 62" x 79" x 45" and 60 kW are installed in Incoloy-sheathed tubular elements to heat the oven chamber, while a 6,000-cfm, 5-hp recirculating blower provides combination airflow to the workload. The oven features 6" insulated walls, aluminized steel exterior and interior, a two-lane roller conveyor inside and outside the oven for loading, a top- mounted heating chamber, an electrically-operated vertical lift door at the rear of the oven, 62" x 45" front-access doors, a fully insulated floor and an integral leg stand. Controls on No. 1032 include a digital indicating temperature controller, a manual-reset excess temperature controller with separate contactors, an SCR power controller, a recirculating-blower airflow safety switch and a fused disconnect switch. Molders can clean critical equipment parts while they are still at operating temperature, without water or chemicals. In addition, the systems can eliminate blemishes and unwanted flash that occurs in the parting line of mold halves. Dry ice blasting uses dry ice pel- lets made from recycled carbon dioxide. The dry ice pellets subli- mate, or turn back into CO 2 gas, when they come into contact with equip- ment. According to the company, the production of dry ice gives the recycled CO 2 a "second life" before it is released into the atmosphere, thereby delaying its effects on the environment.
