Product Focus 40 MoldMaking Technology January 2015 Machining HMC Series Features Pallet Range of 300-1,250 mm Methods Machine Tools has expanded its line of Kiwa horizontal machining centers with the KMH series, featuring pallet sizes ranging from 300 to 1,250 mm. The series includes the compact KMH-300, offering a 15,000-rpm direct- drive, 30-taper spindle and dual 300-mm pallets; and the KMH-630B, which offers a 10,000-rpm, 50-taper spindle and dual 630-mm pallets. Both machines offer an integrated, full rotary B axis, and a FANUC Oi-MD control with a 15" LCD screen. A spindle oil cooling system and coolant-through ballscrews also are standard. The KMH-300 has a footprint of 140" x 107", includ- ing the chip conveyor, and offers XYZ travels of 18.1" x 18.1" x 13.7". A 40-taper version of this model is due out early this year. The KMH-630 offers a footprint of 235" x 137", including the chip conveyor, and travels of 39.7" x 33.4" x 37.4". Also available are Kiwa KH series models such as the KH-55, a 500-mm dual- pallet machine, which offers a 10,000-rpm, CAT 50-taper spindle and 240-tool automatic toolchanger. The KH-4500 features increased rapid rates of 74 m/ min. and a "ball drive system" for the fourth axis that is said to provide no back- lash, resulting in higher rigidity and longer axis life. It is equipped with a 15,000-rpm, 20-hp low-vibration IDD spindle and specialized P12 pitch ballscrews. The VMC also incorporates XYZ travel of 40" x 20" x 21", offering extra working capacity to meet larger die mold requirements. Oversized linear guideways ensures a balance between machining rigid- ity and accuracy. The NXV1020AM also is equipped with a dual-face-contact, 40-taper IDD direct-drive spindle that ensures high cutting rigidity with mini- mal spindle growth and vibration. A spindle cooling system with oil-air mist lubrication to the main bearings is said to extend spindle and machine life in high-speed operations. The VMC also features a high-speed, 24-tool (30 optional) double-arm-type automatic toolchanger system. According to the company, the machine offers more tools and peripherals required for bor- ing as standard features than similar universal-type boring mills, including a 4.33"-diameter quill that enables the use of shorter tools; a contouring fourth-axis rotary table; linear glass scales on the X, Y and Z axes to maintain thermal stability and increase accuracy; and a 60-tool automatic toolchanger. The HBMX55i also offers a W stroke of 19", a geared-head spindle with two speeds and hardened box ways. It is powered by an integrated Hurco control that supports both ISO/EIA NC and conversational programming, and includes the company's UltiMotion motion system.
