Product Focus 58 MoldMaking Technology November 2014 Milling Cutters Remove Large Quantities of Metal Inspired by Kub Quatron drills and using the same inserts, the Quatron hi.feed milling cutter from Komet is designed to remove large quan- tities of metal in a variety of milling operations, including plunge milling. According to the company, plunge milling, which requires a roughing tool that can quickly remove large material quantities, is ideal for cutting deep grooves and large cavities in applications that require large projection lengths or are subject to unstable conditions. The indexable tool features four cutting edges per insert, reducing production costs per cutter. The inserts are composed of tough sub- strates, suitable for use with steel, cast iron and stainless materials. The high volume of chip removal achieved with the cutter, along with its high feed rates, allow for increased productivity and reduced run times, also reducing cost without sacrificing performance or quality, the company says. This wire technology is a result of col- laboration between Makino and EDM wire manufac- turer Bedra, which smelts, draws and coats its own materials in-house. Together, the wire and HyperCut technology provide improved part accuracy and surface finish and reduced cycle time, SST says. The core material of the HyperCut wire is brass, with an outer coating of gamma-phase brass and a tensile strength 900 MPa. It is available in 0.008", 0.010" and 0.012" diameters on P5, P10, B8 and B16 spools purchased from SST. They are offered in 109 standard sizes with IDs ranging from 3/32" to 3/4" and lengths ranging from 3" to 12". The sleeves also can be customized to IDs of 1/16" with varying wall thicknesses, ID/ OD combinations and as long as 25". In addi- tion, custom front and EDM forms, head flats, and vents are available, as are other steels. Ezell Precision Tool Co. / 727-573-3575 / ezellprecision.com
