Product Focus 52 MoldMaking Technology November 2014 Iron-Core Linear Motors Have Anti-Cogging Design Distributed in North America through Heidenhain Corp., Etel's LMS series of iron-core linear motors features an anti-cogging design well-suited for thermal-drift-sensitive precision machines and demanding motion control applications. This design enables high peak force density in the magnetic gap, as well as high thermal efficiency. LMS motors offer continuous force ranging to 664 N, which is higher than the company's LMG linear motor series, and peak force as high as 2,760 N with speeds as fast as up to 15 m/sec. Because the mechanical integration is similar with both series, easy upgrades are possible. The LMS series can be used in machines that require a high power density together with a high dynamic for mid-range moving masses. Heidenhain Corp. / 847-490-1191 / heidenhain.us Square Shoulder Mills Offer Large Depths of Cut Seco Tools' R220.LN14 square shoulder mills pro- vide four cutting edges with a 14-mm (0.551") cutting edge length to reduce cost per edge while improving performance in demanding applications requiring a large depth of cut. Negative-rake, 7-mm- thick (0.28") inserts provide the robustness needed for heavy cuts in difficult materials, long-reach applications and less stable setups. The standard tools are able to take depths of cut ranging to 14 mm (0.551"), while helical versions are offered in cutting edge lengths for both contouring and slotting applications. The R220.LN14 cutters are particularly well-suited for medium- to heavy-duty applications requiring a 90-degree wall. Inserts are available in six grades: MS2500, a CVD-coated, wear-resistant and tough grade for machining super-alloy materials and high-carbon steels; the tougher 420470; 150060, which is similar to Seco's F40M; 029060, an alter- native to the company's MK1500 with a PVD coating; MP2500, a medium-steel CVD Duratomic grade; and MK1500, a cast iron CVD Duratomic grade.
